The World
Seventeen year old Makoto Konno is your average Japanese girl. She lives in the Shitamachi area of Tokyo with her parents and younger sister and spends the majority of her free time with her best friends Chiaki and Kosuke. There isn't really much to say about Makoto's world that differs from the world we live in today. It's 2006, so technology isn't quite where we're at today but it's certainly not far behind. Her high school is average, the streets are tidy and not overly busy and there are baseball fields available to Makoto and her friends.
The Future
A location we never see but that is referenced to a few times and proves to be a key plot point to the movie is 'the future'. A set year is never given, but it's far enough ahead of Makoto's time that the world has well and truly destroyed itself. It’s a pretty miserable place.
The Tech of the Future
While there is no baseball, no bicycles, the sky has lost it's blue and the rivers have ceased to run, technology has progressed in leaps and bounds. The world might be in ruin, but pretty much anyone (seriously, a 17 year old boy is given access to the tech) can bounce back and forth in time. This is thanks to an unnamed device that looks like an walnut. The device charges the body and allows the user x amount of 'leaps' through time. Whether this technology is being used to save this future world, we never do find out.
The Art Gallery
There isn’t much to say here, but it’s worth a mention. I can’t find a name for the gallery itself but I’m sure one exists. It’s never given in the movie at least. Makoto’s aunt works at an art gallery where her role is to restore paintings to their original glory. One of the paintings she’s working on is the whole reason why this time leaping business with Makoto comes into play. Makoto’s friend Chiaki comes to Makoto’s time from the future just to see that painting, but since it’s being restored it’s not on display. The painting doesn’t exist in the future. War and humanity took care of that, but it’s a symbol of hope to Chiaki and something he’s willing to wait around to see.
Personality:
While she means well, Makoto is a clumsy, reckless young girl who really doesn't think before she acts. She's happy go lucky most of the time and likes to laugh and smile and play baseball. Mako is friendly and outgoing, enjoying the chance to meet people and seems perfectly able to talk to a stranger with no issue. She's naive about most things, and tends to figure that if she's happy, everyone else must obviously be happy too so everything is good. This is rarely the case and it takes her a long time to catch on that there's an issue. She has a tendency to babble and pouts about the simplest of things. Food is the way to her heart and something she'll fight tooth and nail for. Pudding theft is serious business. That said, she's a forgiving person and never holds a grudge for long.
Her friends and family are everything to her and Makoto only wants them to be happy. Thus she tries to change the world so everyone is doing well and... fails miserably... and repeatedly. This is where the majority of Makoto's 'time leaps' get spent. Of course, she doesn't realize the value of the leaps she's using and it takes her a good 80 leaps to catch on that the quota is counting down. Her grades at school are miserable. Study isn't a strong point for Makoto, even if she's well aware that it should be. Hitting the books just doesn't interest her. There's an interesting world out there to explore and have fun in and studying really doesn't cover that for her.
When focused on a task, Mako slips into tunnel vision and sets her mind only on that goal and how to achieve it, without really paying attention to what's going on around her or what effect it might have on others. She's selfish in an innocent kind of way, in that her lack of realization that she's screwing someone over is genuine. From the point she's being taken from, Makoto has come to realize this a little, but is still going to need quite a bit of work to break the habit.
When it comes to deeper feelings, be it a crush or confusion in regards to a big decision, Makoto is completely clueless on how to act. Pushing the issue aside for review on a day that will probably never come or employing the ostrich 'head in the sand' tactic tend to be her default reactions. If all else fails, she procrastinates until someone forces her to do it. Hell, when she could time leap she would actively run from the situation over and over and try to manipulate the scene to stop the thing she wasn't ready to hear from happening. It never quite worked out for her.
At the heart of it all though, Makoto is a good person and an optimist. She wants the best for everyone and is only ever trying to help. In Tu Shanshu she'll be nervously stepping up the the challenge and giving it her all. In a fight she's more flight than fight, but sitting idle and hiding isn't her thing either. From the sidelines, Makoto will help as best she can. It just wouldn't sit right with her not to.
Appearance:
Like most japanese teenage girls, Makoto is a shorty. Her build is thin but she seems to have a pretty good fitness level. She can run quite a bit without falling over and dying and is always eager to play ball. Her complexion is on the paler side and her hair is cut to a short style just past her ears. In looks and appeal, she's not ugly but not quite stunning either. Makoto is cute in her own way and a bit of a tom boy. Her hair is dark brown and her eyes a shade to match.
Also here is a Makoto.
Abilities:
Makoto is your average human girl. She once possessed the ability to leap back in time, but she’s literally used her very last jump right as she came to the turtle.
The time leap ability came to her via a small, walnut shaped device that charges the body with a limited number of leaps. From there, a counter appears like a tattoo on the user indicating how many leaps are left. Making a jump back in time literally involves a jump or leap of some form plus a clear thought of where you’re going back to. The bigger the jump back, the bigger the leap needs to be.
She won’t be able to time leap in Tu Shanshu, but I felt I should explain it all the same. The tattooed counter will remain on her arm, reading a sad and sorry 00. Bam. That’s it. There’s nothing left.
Inventory:
Pants, t-shirt, sneakers, cell phone. That's about it.

Makoto paused in pedaling to stand up on the bike, letting the pre-built momentum take her along the path home. It was a nice day out, blue sky and fluffy white clouds hanging overhead and the sun, while starting to set, still held a fair amount of light and warmth. The wind in her hair was a welcome feeling, and for a brief moment Makoto chanced closing her eyes. Reason said she shouldn't, that there was always the chance she would run into something or someone and with a knack for being a klutz like her, not watching where she was going was practically asking for trouble. But it all felt so nice. The street was clear save for her, the ground without a bump so as long as she kept her balance and didn't push her luck, then it should all go without incident.
"Hey!"
The voice came as if from nowhere, distant but very much there. The wind stopped, bike vanishing as though she'd never been riding it at all. Makoto stood and looked around. Empty as the street was, now she looked around to find it confusing, as though something were out of place that she couldn't quite put her finger on or that something were missing entirely.
"Makoto. Wake up."
The words came as a shock, the dark haired girl snapping awake and finding her face stuck to the test paper. At the front of her desk stood the teacher, a disapproving frown on his features while he tapped a finger on his folded arms. "Uh... I um..." Makoto started, sitting up with a start and shooting the teacher a slightly frantic look. "I just closed my eyes for a second. Really! I wasn't sleeping."
His expression didn't change, and with a warning shake of his head, the class head resumed his pacing of the room. Makoto breathed a sigh of relief and glanced at the exam paper. She'd answer most of it... well, some of it. The little bit is what counts, right? That she'd tried? A snicker from her left caused Makoto to turn, her unhappy gaze coming to rest on a tall redhead boy with his head down and shoulders shaking from barely contained laughter. "Chiaki, it's not funny," Makoto muttered, her annoyance only growing when her comment made him grin more. "Don't be a jerk!"
From the front of the room came the teacher's voice again. "Miss Konno. If I have to warn you again, you'll be staying back after class."
Makoto cringed, shot Chiaki a nasty glance and looked back to the exam. A moment passed with nothing but silence and then her companion spoke again. "You were snoring."
The room around her burst into giggles while Makoto's cheeks turned red, expression one of stunned terror. This had to be a joke. "I do not! I don't snore!"
ALSO. A TDM THREAD. :D

So um... I was kinda wondering. If we're gonna be stuck here in this... place and getting home is kinda off limits, then how about we bring something from home that we know and teach it to everyone here? Maybe then home wouldn't feel so far away. I think it'd be kinda fun too!
Like, I could teach you all how to play baseball! And maybe someone can find a way to make pudding!
...Does anyone know how to make pudding? If someone could then you would so be my hero. I'd pay you back for it somehow. Not like I have much money here but I'm sure we could work out something. So how about it? Someone find a way to make pudding and I'll help out in return. I could uh... do all your chores or something for a week!
...Deal? Anyone?
